Church Edition

For Small Groups

With our goal to partner with the Church to equip and send the whole people of God, we designed the Foundations in Kingdom Theology – Church Edition to bring together our mutual strengths. WTC provides its expertise through recorded teaching, so you can facilitate the content to shape your local community according to your needs.

The content consists of 24 video sessions by WTC Faculty, with accompanying notes. Each session consists of 2 x 15-20 minute lectures, designed to be followed by group discussions facilitated by a local group leader.

Our goal is to help those wanting to go deeper in the faith to have a solid foundation of theological knowledge, equipping people to know where they stand if faced with theological and cultural speculation. For this purpose, the course provides an introduction to the foundations of the Christian faith and is pitched at Level 3 (A-levels/Scottish Highers).

Modules include the Bible, Christian beliefs and practices, early Church history, and leadership. There is no need for any prior study of theology.

Since the study of theology is best situated in the church, students will benefit from time for weekly discussions. We recommend planning for an hour to an hour and a half per teaching and discussion session. WTC provides Facilitator Guidance to help the participants to get the most out of this course.

So participants can revisit previous material, all enrolled participants will have access to the lectures on the web platform and course notes for the year of their study. An additional online meeting with a Faculty member at the end of each module is available as an extra option.

This is a non-validated course.

Church Edition Modules:

with Dr Freddy Hedley & Prof Ben Blackwell

8 sessions

This module traces the story of God’s work in the world throughout the Bible so believers can understand their place within it. To help people not to get lost in the various characters and episodes, we orientate students to the central movement from creation to new creation by attending to God’s redemptive work with the people of Israel and the church. We particularly focus on the themes of covenant and kingdom to explore this story, helping people to understand Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection in the power of the Holy Spirit and what this means for us today.

This module helps students understand the transition from the biblical narrative to its embodiment in the life of the church. We focus on the foundations of the Church by exploring the theology and practice of the earliest Christians in the first and second centuries after the New Testament. We explore how they navigated this new faith in the complexities of diverse and pluralistic cultures, how they faced the challenge of remaining faithful despite external pressures and how they expressed the Christian faith in coherent and vibrant ways amidst internal disputes.

This module helps students understand the coherence of and beauty of God’s identity and work in the world and our place in it. The content focuses on the central aspects of our faith by exploring questions concerning the Trinity, Jesus the God-man, the nature of revelation, and the person of the Holy Spirit. Importantly, the teaching shows how these key doctrines affect our discipleship, worship, and mission today.

This module addresses the development of the basic characteristics enabling Christians to lead with integrity, wisdom, humility and insight. The focus is on dealing with the leader’s inner life, with the understanding that most of the failures in Christian leadership are more to do with undealt-with flaws of the heart than lack of leadership skills. No leader is immune to the subtleties of ministry pressures and this module looks at the ways in which leaders can be aware of their own insecurities and maintain transparency before God and colleagues in order to safeguard not only themselves but those they lead.
